If you want to know how to choose the niche for your website, you need to take in consideration some aspects and ask yourself some questions before even thinking in the niche.
Choose the niche for your website
Questions
- Which is the purpose of your website? Is it a blog, an online store, an presentation website or even a online calling card?
- You want to promote yourself through your website? You want to earn some extra cash or become a guru in your domain? You want to compete with big companies which are producing the same product as you?
- Have you though how you will do it? Will it be on a common CMS such as WordPress? Will you make it from scratch or put someone to do it for you? Do you have the graphic skills necessary, programming skills and idea about what it’s SEO? Will you need SEO? Will be optimized also for mobile devices?
Let’s take as an example this website. I am talking about law and freelancing here, so 2 niches. It’s a blog + presentation website. I intend to get some authority out there and reveal my skills. I am offering my services, so I intend to earn some money. I decided to go on with an CMS platform already made which I modified almost entirely – WordPress. I considered necessary to be optimized also for mobile devices. And I continue to improve it for a even better user experience on reading this website.
What you like and what you do offline
When you had chosen the niche for your website and you answered already to the questions mentioned above, you must think at what you know and what you like.
If it will be a blog, think at what you would like to write about and what makes you enjoy talking about.
Tip: Ask yourself if you would keep continuing writing on your blog about the same subject after 1-2 years. If the answer is no, then maybe it’s not too late to choose something different.
At what you are good at? In which domain you have experience and knowledge to write about?
If your website would be an online store, you need to focus on creating the best products, the best descriptions, the best customer service and the best user experience on your website to stand out of the crowd.
For websites such as blogs, online stores, magazines and so on you would need to attract visitors, so start learning some SEO (search engine optimization).
But I want to get money, how to choose the niche?
Stand out of the crowd. Period. That is what you have to do.
Online there are probably billions of websites, blogs and forums which will talk about your subject. So better choose a micro-niche.
One person which talks about creating a micro-niche is Harsh Agrawal. His way of choosing the micro-niche it’s sort of unique and seems like it gave him a good result.
Accordingly to him, you won’t need backlinks or other promotions, only “organic traffic” in order to promote an qualitative content carefully SEO optimized. Also make sure that the content that you write will be in trend for a long period (at least a few years), in another words – the so-called “evergreen” posts.
The SEO optimization can be learned, the content must be written by you and be unique. For this, have a look again at the questions from above and try to answer one more time to them. Be sure that you are able to put passion and hard work in your content and that you can do it for a long time, otherwise you will end up probably frustrated and deleting everything.
Choose the niche: Research the trends and competition in your niche
If you decided which will be the main topic of your website/blog/magazine/shop, make a keyword research and find the perfect ones which can catapultate you above everybody.
The simplest way to do it among other much advanced it’s browsing the web. Search your keywords on Google, Yahoo, Bing and MSN (the main search engines)Â and see which would be your competitors and how many results you get on each of the search engines.
If you find websites with tens of thousands of monthly visitors, you won’t be able to compete with them, so check other keywords. You need to find the perfect area where to place your website in the search engines and micro-niching your website will only propulsate you in the first place if you offer the proper content.
Other method for searching for proper keywords are SEMRUSH with which you can check the density of your keywords and check other websites from your niche to determine how they can stand front.
Don’t neglect Google Trends because it’s offering valuable information about what is now in trends, what people is reading and interested in.
There is actually the difference between a great post and a poor post. You provide information. The needs of the people, accordingly to Wikipedia, are changing often and a good marketer must follow up the trends! Even if the quality of it is high, if people is not interested, they won’t read it! If you see for example that one of your posts got visitors (discussing when you will have your website done), it’s a good idea to make more posts on the same topic.
In this way you will be able to determine what people is consuming (remember that what you write is what you sell and people are your customers) and from an entire niche you can discuss about only a small part of it and stand front.
The advantages of choose an micro niche is that even if you won’t get all the traffic from all the niche (the mother niche), the traffic which you will get will be qualitative. One over another, you said that you want to get money, so you need to make your readers customers.
Simple way to check the competition on Google
This is a small tip I will share with you in order to choose the niche correctly.
Let’s assume that you want to make a blog about windows phone apps.
If you search on google “windows phone apps”, you will most probably find around 300 million results. Here is a print screen showing you the number of results:
But that is not all of your competition because Google searches for all the websites that have included in their content keywords such as windows phone, windows, phone, apps, windows apps.
If you put within quotes your keywords, you will see the exact number of websites which are using your keywords. But if you go to the last page of the search results (generally the tenth page), you find the exact number. That is your competition. Have a look bellow:
So you will have exactly 98 important posts which will compete with you (or you with them). About these ones you should be aware off and stand front.
As you can see, the competition on these keywords it’s low. Check the influence of these websites and see if you can stand in front of them. If you find within these results (from these ninety eight) big websites such as instructables.com (you got the idea, to be big and influential) and with tens of thousands of visitors per month, choose other keywords to focus on.
Why I should choose the niche?
Having an website in the final resumes to getting a tone of people to visit and read your content. This is why you need to choose carefully and never neglect the competition. You promote yourself by standing out from the crowd and not being part of the crowd (last one in the list). Stand front and choose the niche wisely!
