There are many ways to define the human consciousness. It was also a philosophic matter debated along the history. But one person which sounds very inspiring and which is discussing about it it’s Alan Watts (1915 – 1973). A philosopher, a writer and a promoter of the oriental culture within Europeans.
He states that the human consciousness is at the same time as being a form of awareness and sensitivity and understanding. It’s also a form of ignorance. The ordinary everyday consciousness that we have leaves out more than it takes in. And because of this, it leaves out things that are terribly important, it leaves out thinks that if we would did know them allay our fears and anxiety and horrors and, if we could extend our awareness to include those things that we leave out, we would have a deep interior peace.
The importance of this so-called definition given by Alan Watts it’s nothing else than a way to make us understand the importance of being aware, having the mind clear and focused permanently, searching the environment, searching the roots of the life itself and all that surrounds us. I will call it also “a filter” to learn. The capacity to understand the principles of life would probably, as Alan Watts states, make us live in a deep interior peace. Just because we would have the capacity to learn from our mistakes and teach them to the future generations.
The life – Alan Watts
The life seen through the eyes of Alan Watts it’s nothing else than vibration, one that we don’t fully understand. But he gives a very interesting example: look down with a microscope to a dead body and you will still see the cells moving. There is still life. Or, without the vibration of the cells, the body wouldn’t transform into dust.
The idea of the vibrations its present in many oriental cultures (including Buddhism, Hinduism and so on) closely related to the cosmic orientation. In the human body, these vibrations are the source of our senses that we percept. The curiosity made people along the history to research and study. The consciousness of the surroundings, trying to find the answer to one question: from where the consciousness come from?
